The small print

Privacy

No cookies, no ads, no tracking across sites. This is everything the site does with your visit.

Page views

The site counts its own page views, so I know what people read. It uses no cookies and no outside analytics service, and it keeps nothing that could tell who you are. For each page you open, it sends one small request to my own server with:

  • the address of the page;
  • the site that linked you here, if any, by name only, such as google.com;
  • the page on this site you clicked from, if you came from one;
  • the campaign named in the link, if any (utm_source or ref).

Like every request to any website, it also carries your IP address and your browser's user agent. The server never reads your IP address: the host only tells it which country the request came from. The user agent becomes three words, your browser, operating system and kind of device (phone, tablet or desktop), and is then thrown away.

So a stored view is a page, a date, where it came from and those few words. There is no visitor code and no time of day. Nothing connects one of your views to another, so I count visits, not people. A view from another site, or from nowhere, starts a visit. A click between pages of this site continues it.

How long

Page views are kept for 25 months. After that, each day becomes a count of views and visits per page, and the views themselves are deleted.

Why

Knowing which pages are read helps me write better ones. I share these counts with nobody, and nothing is used for ads or profiles. Where the GDPR applies to any of this, the basis is a legitimate interest (article 6(1)(f)).

Opting out

Stop counting my visits. This adds ?notrack to the address, which works on any page. Your browser remembers the choice on your device and the site stops sending anything at all. Count my visits again undoes it. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, your visits are never counted.

Maps

Some posts have a map. It only loads when you ask for it. Your browser then fetches the map from OpenStreetMap (opens in a new tab), and the aerial photos, if you pick them, from Digitaal Vlaanderen (opens in a new tab). Like any website, they see your IP address. Your browser remembers that you allowed maps, so you are not asked on every page.

Settings in your browser

The theme, the reading settings in the accessibility menu, your choice about maps and your opt-out are kept in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are never sent to me.

Hosting

Vercel (opens in a new tab) hosts the site and the server that counts page views. Like any host, it handles every request, your IP address included, to deliver the page. The page views are stored in a database at Turso (opens in a new tab).

Your rights

Because nothing I keep says who you are, I cannot find your visits among the rest, and there is nothing about you to show, correct or delete. Opting out above stops all future counting at once. Write to hello@nickbevers.dev with any question.

If you think I handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority (opens in a new tab).

Who

This site is run by me, Nick Bevers, in Belgium. I am responsible for what it does with your data.

Display settings

Stored on this device only. Nothing is sent anywhere.
